The many traits we look for in a "good" teacher may be broken down into two broad categories: personal traits that make a man, and professional traits connected to his subjects and his job as a teacher. The term "a good teacher" refers to the combination of these two sorts of qualities. A teacher who possesses many positive personal traits but lacks formal education is not a teacher. Old-fashioned teachers are not necessarily "excellent" teachers unless they exhibit a few particular traits that we always seek out. Everyone in the world has made mistakes at some point. Being human, both teachers and students make mistakes occasionally. The idea that teachers are always right should be challenged by a good teacher. The proud teachers are able to own their errors and express regret to the offending students. Unfortunately, some educators try to ignore these errors or rapidly cover them up because they believe that doing so could compromise their authority in the classroom. Quite obviously, students have differing viewpoints. They are completely aware of the occasions when teachers err, particularly when they themselves experience them. Teachers who own their errors and express regret when they negatively impact pupils set a wonderful example for their charges and are much more likely to be remembered as beloved instructors.
